FLAX INVITES Supports France-based and Southern California Cultural Partners by Offering Accommodation to Artists, Curators, and Critics Who Need Time in Los Angeles to Work on a Specific Project

The FLAX Invites program allows artists, curators, and critics to spend time in Los Angeles by offering accommodation at the FLAX House in Highland Park. Beneficiaries must be invited by France-based and Southern California cultural partners, nonprofit organizations, or artist-run spaces for an educational or research-driven project with no commercial purpose. Consideration goes to a wide breadth of cultural producers with diverse practices and institutions that have varied functions, with a focus on France-related projects.

As FLAX ceased its activity in June 2020, we are no longer accepting applications for this program.

Description of the FLAX House

FLAX Invites offers the use of a furnished apartment in a shared house in Highland Park, which includes a living room, bedroom, and bathroom with a kitchen and full amenities (Wi-Fi, A/C). The house is located just off Avenue 50 and Figueroa Street, a few blocks from the Highland Park Metro Station and walking distance from all shops.

FLAX Invites does not function as a business or grant organization. FLAX House is offered as a means of support for artists and scholars invited by France-based and Southern California cultural institutions. No rent or labor is exchanged between them and FLAX; however, the following conditions must be agreed upon by both parties (the artists or scholars and their host organization):

  • Minimum one-week stay.
  • Maximum occupancy is two persons.
  • A signed agreement and liability waiver, as well as a security deposit will be required upon acceptance of the application.
  • An inventory will be made at the guest’s arrival signed by the guest, their host organization, and FLAX. The host organization agrees to act as a guarantor for any damage to the house or furniture during the stay of the guest.
  • No insurance coverage is provided including medical, liability, or personal property.
  • A donation to FLAX is suggested to support operational expenses of the FLAX House.
